The College of Law at the University of Al-Qadisiyah strives to be a model institution in achieving sustainable development through the creation of a green university environment that balances modern infrastructure with open natural spaces. This vision aligns with the university’s policy of transforming the campus into a setting that is both human- and eco-friendly, in accordance with the globally recognized “Green Campus” standards.
The college’s buildings are distributed across a total area of approximately 17,000 square meters, surrounded by wide gardens and cultivated areas that provide a calm and harmonious atmosphere with the natural surroundings. Green spaces and shade trees constitute an essential part of the campus design, hosting several native tree species such as sidr and acacia. The forested areas cover around 6,100 square meters, while planted vegetation and flowers occupy about 35% of the total area. These green zones are regularly maintained to ensure their sustainability and to enhance air quality across the campus.
In its efforts to preserve the environment, the college cooperates closely with the university’s Environmental Division to maintain native plants and encourage the cultivation of drought-resistant species, while ensuring the protection of all living organisms within the campus. These initiatives are in harmony with national and global goals related to food security and biodiversity conservation. Moreover, the college employs modern irrigation systems to optimize water consumption through drip irrigation and smart scheduling methods, with an average annual water use of approximately 4,709 cubic meters, covering the irrigation of gardens and forested areas.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the college successfully continued its maintenance and operational activities while implementing strict safety protocols, including constant sanitation of buildings and hallways. Academic activities were sustained through e-learning platforms, ensuring the continuity of education within a safe and healthy environment—demonstrating the college’s resilience and adaptability in times of crisis.
The college places great emphasis on safety and health facilities. It is equipped with fire extinguishing systems, alarm devices, and security cameras installed throughout corridors and classrooms. In addition, a specialized subcommittee for safety and emergency management conducts regular evacuation drills to ensure preparedness.
Furthermore, the college is distinguished by its clean pathways and sidewalks lined with vegetation that reduces dust dispersion and enhances the aesthetic and environmental quality of the campus. The design of these pathways takes into account the needs of persons with disabilities by providing ramps and designated access routes that allow smooth and safe movement throughout all facilities. The open spaces serve as ecological and social breathing zones for students, covering an estimated 5,000 square meters, equivalent to approximately 5.3 square meters per student, reflecting a well-balanced ratio between population density and natural environment.
Overall, the College of Law has successfully transformed the “Green Campus” concept into practical reality by integrating sound urban planning with continuous environmental stewardship. Through these efforts, the college reaffirms its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting environmental awareness, rationalizing resource consumption, and strengthening partnerships with relevant institutions to preserve a healthy, balanced, and exemplary academic environment for higher education in Iraq.
