The College of Law at the University of Al-Qadisiyah places great importance on waste management as a key component of its sustainable development strategy, recognizing that a clean and sustainable campus begins with responsible practices in handling waste and minimizing its environmental impact. Guided by this awareness, the College has established a clear mechanism for waste sorting and classification according to type, using specially designated and clearly labeled containers—an initiative aimed at promoting a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, and administrative staff.
The College implements an integrated waste management system based on source separation. Color-coded and labeled containers have been distributed throughout the College’s corridors and outdoor areas to facilitate collection and transport. These containers are categorized into several types: those for recyclable waste such as paper, plastic, metal, and glass; containers for used batteries; containers for food waste; and others for toxic waste generated from laboratory or chemical use, in addition to general waste containers for daily household-type refuse. Each container is equipped with a durable metal or fiberglass sign bearing standardized colors and symbols to simplify sorting and enhance users’ awareness of proper waste classification.
To reduce non-organic waste, the College has adopted a policy to minimize the use of paper and plastic in both administrative and academic operations. This has been achieved by transitioning to electronic correspondence through the university’s internal intranet network, which connects the College to all departments. This measure has significantly reduced paper and plastic consumption within the College, aligning with the goals of sustainable development and minimizing the environmental footprint of academic institutions.
The College also works to raise environmental awareness among students and staff through educational campaigns and outreach programs emphasizing the importance of waste management and resource conservation. It encourages student and faculty research projects addressing environmental, sustainability, and recycling issues as part of the university’s broader commitment to social responsibility.
Through these practical measures, the College of Law at the University of Al-Qadisiyah has made waste management an essential part of its environmental framework, affirming that protecting the campus environment is achieved not only through green infrastructure but also through responsible behavior and collective awareness that firmly embeds the principles of sustainable development in daily life within the university campus.
